The role
A paralegal provides crucial support to fee earners to ensure they are operating at optimum efficiency. It is vital that a paralegal has a high level of self-discipline and exceptional time management. The role of a paralegal will include, but is not limited to, the responsibilities listed below:
Key Responsibilities
- Administrative Support: Provide secretarial support, including typing, transcribing, and managing correspondence.
- Document Preparation: Produce, proofread and draft legal documents.
- Client Interaction: Liaise with clients and third-party providers to obtain necessary documentation and provide updates on case progress. Attend meetings with fee earners for note taking.
- File Management: Open, maintain, and close client files accurately, ensuring compliance with the firm’s filing system.
- Compliance: Conduct due diligence related to updated case law in your department.
- Scheduling: Manage appointments and maintain an up-to-date diary system.
- Communication: Handle telephone calls, emails, and in-person inquiries, ensuring high levels of client care.
- Legal Research: Conducting thorough legal research to support case preparation, including analysing laws, regulations, and legal articles.
- Case Management: Organising and managing case files, documents, and exhibits, ensuring all materials are easily accessible and up to date.
- Court Filings: Preparing and filing legal documents with the court, ensuring compliance with court procedures and deadlines, attending court hearings where necessary.
Skills and Qualifications
- Education: A paralegal certification or a degree in law is preferred.
- Experience: Previous experience in a similar role is highly desirable.
- IT Skills: Proficiency in legal software, case management systems, and Microsoft Office.
- Personal Attributes: Strong organisational skills, attention to detail, excellent communication abilities, and the ability to manage multiple tasks under pressure.
